Purpose-driven investor
We want to be Europe's leading purpose-driven investor and create value for generations. To this end, we are building sustainable businesses for a future worth living as part of our enkelfähig approach. Our goal is a portfolio of 10 to 15 enkelfähig companies in the investment pillars People, Planet and Progress. This way, we aim to generate a total shareholder return of more than nine percent.
Our investment approach
As a family-owned company we have over 265 years of experience with transformation. We have always courageously adjusted our portfolio and structures to new conditions. That's what we are still doing today. We only invest in business models that can now and in the long run make a positive contribution to a future worth living. We thereby focus on our three investment pillars: People, Planet, Progress. We base our specific selection on the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and global megatrends. In doing so, we focus on the performance of our portfolio and set ourselves clear, ambitious targets: We want to generate a total return of more than nine percent in the medium term and outperform the capital market.
How we evaluate business models and products
10 principles for a future worth living
Our idea of a future worth living is based on sustainable value creation which is in harmony with the protection of the environment and serves the well-being of all species. We want to live up to our social responsibility and create a balance between tradition and innovation. To evaluate the sustainability of business models and products on this basis, we have developed our own rigorous assessment system. It is guided by our 10 Future Worth Living (FWL) principles. The result of each rating is a score that, for example, influences the decision on a potential acquisition or indicates the enkelfähig level of a product.

Planet
In the Planet investment field, we concentrate on two overarching themes: circular economy and climate change. Business models that are interesting for Haniel include recycling and environmental protection services, climate-neutral energy production and renewable energies. We ensure that our planet is preserved for future generations.

Transformation
In our Transformation pillar, we bundle portfolio companies that we cannot assign to the investment pillars, but which we want to develop further in a targeted manner. We work together to ensure that the businesses assigned to this pillar meet our requirements for sustainability and performance orientation.

Promoting growth
Growth Capital
In addition to its focus on established companies, Haniel also engages in targeted early-stage investments. With an emphasis on the Planet theme, we use both funds and minority stakes. We seek to participate in the growth of promising companies and to take advantage of additional diversification opportunities.
