METRO GROUP strengthens wholesale business with the acquisition of RUNGIS express

Dusseldorf, 12 February 2016. With the acquisition of the leading premium foods supplier RUNGIS express, METRO GROUP is purposefully extending the delivery business of its METRO Cash & Carry wholesale operations. Subject to approval by the responsible antitrust authorities and supervisory bodies, the Düsseldorf-based retail group will acquire the German and international business of RUNGIS express with headquarters in Meckenheim as well as the corresponding logistics and service activities. With this investment, METRO GROUP once again underscores its repositioning as a multi-channel retail company that purposefully combines its online and offline business.

RUNGIS express is a leading company in the field of food service distribution, i.e. the direct delivery of premium foods to customers from the hotel, restaurant and catering (HoReCa) sector. The company forms part of the Cool Chain Group,which operates various trading and logistics entities. The brand and the independence of RUNGIS express will be retained also after the takeover. Also covered by the transaction are the activities of RUNGIS express in Austria, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain as well as its logistics activities, the retail business (cc delivery) and its headquarters in Germany. This acquisition will complement the existing food distribution activities of METRO Cash & Carry with special expertise and know-how in the FSD segment. The parties agreed not to disclose the value of the transaction.

RUNGIS express supplies premium foods and delicatessen with a focus on the fresh/ultrafresh range, in particular meat and poultry as well as fish and seafood. In addition, the offering also includes fruit and vegetables, mise-en-place products and hand-made fresh pasta. The assortment covers around 3,000 products from more than 60 countries. High end gastronomes make up the majority of the company's more than 6,000 customers. In total, RUNGIS express has around 600 employees. The company's turnover amounted to approximately €130 million in 2014.

In Switzerland, RUNGIS express operates under the name Fideco and is mainly known in the premium-class gastronomy sector for its fresh fish selection. The retail entity cc delivery supplies an assortment of more than 1,000 products to the top delicatessen in Germany. In addition to the established delivery business, METRO GROUP also acquires Cool Chain Group's logistics activities in Germany. Their core competence lies in the temperature-controlled shipment of perishable goods with a vehicle fleet of over 150 state-of-the-art transporters as well as trucks with a three-chamber system.
