Leadership change at the Haniel Group

Thomas Schmidt in discussion to succeed Stephan Gemkow

Duisburg, 18 December 2018. By amicable agreement with the shareholders of Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH, Stephan Gemkow will resign as Chairman of the Management Board on 30 June 2019. Subject to the approval of the Supervisory Board, Thomas Schmidt, member of the Haniel Management Board since 30 January 2017, is expected to follow Stephan Gemkow.

“The Shareholder Family and the company owe Stephan Gemkow greatest gratitude” says Franz Markus Haniel, Chairman of the Supervisory Board. “In 2012, Stephan Gemkow took responsibility for Franz Haniel & Cie. when it was facing extreme challenges. With foresight, pragmatism and entrepreneurial courage, Mr Gemkow has put the company back on sound financial footing and took strategic steps for a successful future. With this, and with his sense of responsibility, straightforwardness and openness, he has quickly earned the trust of shareholders, executives and staff. We deeply regret Mr Gemkow's decision but understand that Mr Gemkow now wants to turn to other tasks after successfully completing this phase for the company. We wish him success in his future endeavours.”

As a member of the Managing Board of Franz Haniel & Cie. and as CEO of CWS-boco GmbH, Thomas Schmidt is currently responsible for managing one of the most important holdings in the Haniel Group. “In the past two years, Mr Schmidt has successfully driven forward the integration of the activities taken over from Rentokil-Initial into CWS-boco and laid the foundations for further profitable growth with analytical skill and a high speed of decision-making,” said Franz Markus Haniel. “We are convinced that Thomas Schmidt can provide valuable contributions to further the development of Franz Haniel & Cie. and to boost the competitiveness of the corporate divisions.”
