Haniel is an internationally successful, family-owned group of companies. In 2010, its around 58,000 employees generated sales of 27.4 billion euros in more than 30 countries. Responsibility for the operating business rests with the five divisions, all of which occupy market-leading positions. Haniel distinguishes between wholly-owned investments (CWS-boco and ELG), majority investments (TAKKT and Celesio) and minority investments (METRO GROUP).
Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH, the Holding Company, is responsible for Group-wide strategic and financial leadership as well as human resources development. Group headquarters have been located in Duisburg for more than 255 years. Haniel has also been a family-owned business for this length of time. However, there is a strict division between ownership and management: since the start of the 20th century, the shareholders (which today stands at over 600) assigned management of the company to external management.
