Haniel Circle

Professor Dr Mittelstraß beim zweiten Haniel Circle

Intensive exchange in a small circle

Giving food for thought for public discourse and developing concrete solutions to current problems – it is with this aim that the Haniel Foundation established the Haniel Circle in November 2007. This event series provides a small circle of representatives from business, science, politics and society with a forum for discussion every two years. A book has been published containing the results from the “Duisburger Dialoge”.

Political answers
The third Haniel Circle in May 2011 addressed the following question: “Who will do the work tomorrow?” The Haniel Foundation invited Ursula von der Leyen as guest speaker. The Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs focused her address on the challenges posed by demographic change to the working world in Germany. Only if companies had a sufficient number of qualified staff would economic growth be guaranteed. In order to counter the increasing shortage of skilled labour it was necessary to provide targeted support to those who so far had been unable to develop fully their potential on the labour market. Read here which solution approaches von der Leyen put forward for discussion with the other participants.

No pain, no gain

According to Professor Udo Di Fabio, a member of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany and a law professor at the University of Bonn, the principle of exchange can bring all sorts of communities together.

“What do we owe each other?”

This was the title of the first volume of the “Duisburger Dialoge”.
