The small Bavarian town of Metten is frequented by young people from Germany, Romania, Hungary and the Slovak and Czech Republics each summer. Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Poles and Germans will be meeting again in Torgelow near Waren on the river Müritz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There is a total of approximately 130 participants in the Multinational Pupils’ Academies. These have been organised by the non-profit association Bildung & Begabung gemeinnützige GmbH since 2003 and 2006 respectively – facilitated by the Haniel Foundation.
On one wavelength
The academies are aimed at particularly gifted pupils from the age of 16. They spend two and a half weeks with each other in which they are devoted to an academic subject. In addition to the courses, the programme also includes a range of leisure activities consisting of culture, sport and excursions. The youngsters expand their horizon by meeting like-minded people from different countries. In this way, they are inspired to think and work across national boundaries. They maintain the contacts which they establish during the Pupils’ Academies, in connection, for example, with the “Alumni Club” or in follow-up meetings.
