The Haniel Foundation's regional support is beginning at the Aletta Haniel Comprehensive School. The pilot project is being conducted in conjunction with Duisburg city council. The Aletta Haniel Programme is aiming to give youngsters the opportunity to improve their prospects. The target group is pupils from the age of 14 who are at risk of failing to obtain or obtaining only a low-grade school leaving certificate. Two specialists recruited specifically for the project are working with the students on their individual strengths and weaknesses. The programme also includes the options of coaching in job application skills and camping trips. It enables youngsters to obtain a good examination pass and thus eases their way into the world of work.
A worthy figurehead
The programme is named after Aletta Haniel (1742-1815), whose father established the founding company. She was a person of exemplary character. Following her husband's early death, Aletta Haniel assumed responsibility for the family business. She made creative use of the opportunities that presented themselves to her as a businesswoman. From the grocery trade, for instance, she expanded into ironware and coal. At the same time, she ensured her sons benefited from an extensive education and so laid the foundation for their subsequent success. By her decisions, Aletta Haniel played a key role in Franz and Gerhard's emergence as industrial pioneers of the Ruhr region.
