Westphalian Wilhelm's University of Münster
Haniel sponsors up to 15 students enrolled with the Controlling Department under Prof. Wolfgang Berens. The Controlling Fellows excellence programme is a supplementary three-semester course. The course fees are paid by Haniel. It includes a seminar chaired by Haniel CFO Prof. Klaus Trützschler, who is an honorary professor at the university. Students attending this course produce practice-related case studies based on an intensive study of the Haniel Group. It gives them an opportunity to establish valuable contacts for a future career – during company excursions, internships or seminars at the Haniel Academie. Each year, moreover, three students are invited to leapfrog the first phase of the application procedure for the group's own Student Development Programme by advancing directly to the selection workshop. A certificate is awarded to those attending this supplemental course.
As a partner company of the Controlling Centre of Excellence, Haniel engages in a systematic interchange with the Department of Controlling. We conduct projects together that address current issues and problems arising from the company's everyday business. Such questions thus become research subjects while they are still topical. We gain direct access to the latest academic findings and can use them for our own purposes. As a member of the Business Advisory Board, Haniel also represents the interests of the SIFE student organisation team in Münster.
Haniel also collaborates with the Chair of International Accounting (Prof. Peter Kajüter). In this case, the Group gives financial support for up to two years to three master's students majoring in accounting. These Haniel scholarships are embedded in the scholarship scheme of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Especially talented students receive 300 euros a month, so that they can dedicate their full attention to studying. One half of the grant is paid by Haniel and the other half by the state.
Haniel also attends the annual careers fair, Business Contacts Münster, hosted by the Economics Faculty. Our presence facilitates a better understanding of our business by students at every stage of learning, and by graduates, doctor's degree students and alumni in every department of the Faculty of Economics.
University of Cologne
In the 2009 summer semester, the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences set up the WiSo Career Service. It provides students with a central point of contact for the questions that arise when planning a career. Haniel uses the service as a platform for establishing contact with students who are studying business administration and economics. We take part in Career Tuesday, for example, with our own company presentation. In addition, experts from the Holding Company and divisions pass on their knowledge and experience to the young scholars at guest lectures in the Seminars for Controlling (Prof. Carsten Homburg), Supply Chain Management and Management Science (Prof. Ulrich Thonemann), and Business Management and Logistics (Prof. Werner Delfmann). In the two latter chairs, the Group awards two Haniel SCM Fellowships per year. The students with the best items of Bachelor work receive a scholarship to enable them to finance their Master’s studies in Supply Chain Management (SCM). In certain cases, financial assistance is also available for individuals studying for a doctorate. On a broader front, as a member of the Supporting Association, we support the interests of students who are studying controlling. By way of this commitment, we enable them to take part in conferences and research projects, and to exchange information with practitioners, for example.
Visitors to CampusChances, the Cologne careers fair, can contact us in person. It is a forum at which students in all semesters, and students and graduates in all subjects, can apply for an internship with Haniel or gain an early insight into the requirements that new entrants are expected to meet.
University of St. Gallen
The Haniel Foundation funds a series of seminars here at the Swiss Graduate School of Business, Economics, Law and Social Science. In the Haniel Seminars, eminent researchers and outstanding scholars address issues that are otherwise neglected by academic institutions in the German-speaking world. Haniel also takes part in the largest recruiting event in Switzerland for economists – the Forum HSG. This event, which has been organised by students at the university since 1984, puts us in touch with numerous emerging business leaders.
Since the start of the 2010/11 winter semester, Haniel employees have been volunteering in the coaching programme at the University of St. Gallen for the first time – the main sponsor behind this programme is the Haniel Foundation. For example, the Haniel coaches give the students tips on preparing for exams and support them in planning their studies. “I enjoy discovering and developing potential in young people”, says Dirk Müller, one of the coaches and Head of Application Platforms (IT) at Haniel. The students also benefit from their supervisors’ contacts. The Haniel employees can organise industrial placements for these students, thereby making their entry into the business world that bit easier. The main function of this intensive exchange of ideas is to allow students to find their own direction. In this way, they will be able to better realise their achievement potential.
University of Mannheim
As a careers partner of the Mannheim Finance & Controlling Club, Haniel sponsors the War of Talents competition. It offers students of selected universities an opportunity to showcase their knowledge in the disciplines of finance and controlling. The contestants produce a practice-related case study and present their findings to a jury, one of whose members is a controlling expert from our Celesio division. After the competition, the participants can find out more about the Haniel Group's offering as an employer in a speed recruiting event, which provides them with an opportunity to lay the foundations for a long-term career partnership.
University of Duisburg-Essen
Haniel sponsors young scholars at the university on its doorstep with five scholarships. The awards form part of the North Rhine-Westphalian Scholarship Scheme and are targeted at emerging economists. The Haniel Foundation is active at the University of Duisburg-Essen as well. It supports the NRW School of Governance with a series of modules constituting the Haniel Master Course.
Witten/Herdecke Private University
The university's annual Marriage Market pursues the goal of forging lasting relationships between economics students and business. Haniel uses the event as an opportunity to identify talented students and offer them mentorships. We give the students an insight into the way we work. In return, they can contribute the latest academic and research findings to the company's knowledge base.
